Before you fall in love with a venue on Instagram, this dog-friendly wedding venue checklist is the most important thing you’ll read. We’ve accompanied dogs at weddings across the UK, and the most heartbreaking situations we encounter are always the same: a couple who assumed their venue was dog-friendly, only to discover on the day that their dog is restricted to the car park – or worse, not allowed inside at all.
The good news? Asking the right questions upfront makes all the difference. Here’s exactly what to ask – and what the answers should tell you.
Is “Dog-Friendly” Actually Dog-Friendly?
The phrase gets used loosely in the wedding industry. It can mean anything from “your dog can attend the entire day including the wedding breakfast” to “we’ll allow a dog on the grounds for photos only.”
Neither is wrong – but if you’re hoping your dog will sit beside you during your vows and curl up under the table at dinner, you need to know exactly what “dog-friendly” means for that specific venue before you sign anything.
The Checklist: Questions to Ask Every Venue
1. Is my dog allowed inside for the ceremony?
Some venues welcome dogs inside the ceremony room. Others restrict dogs to outdoor ceremonies only. If an indoor ceremony with your dog is non-negotiable, confirm this first – don’t assume.
2. Can my dog join the drinks reception?
Drinks receptions are often the easiest part of the day for dogs – outdoor grounds, mingling guests, plenty of space to roam. Most venues that allow dogs at all will permit this, but check whether any areas are off-limits.
3. What about the wedding breakfast?
This is the big one. Many venues that call themselves dog-friendly draw the line at the wedding breakfast for hygiene reasons – particularly those with commercial kitchen regulations to follow. If sharing your wedding dinner with your dog matters to you, you need a venue that explicitly allows it.

4. Is a professional dog handler required?
An increasing number of venues require – or strongly recommend – a professional dog chaperone for the day. This is actually a good sign: it means the venue has thought through how to make it work properly. A chaperone looks after your dog’s needs throughout the day so you can be fully present as a couple.
5. Is there a limit on the number of dogs?
Planning a full canine wedding party? Always check whether the venue has a maximum number of dogs they’ll accommodate.
6. Is there dog-friendly accommodation on site?
If you’re planning a wedding weekend, on-site accommodation that welcomes dogs means your four-legged guest can be part of the whole experience – not dropped at a kennel the night before the biggest day of your life.
7. Are there walks nearby?
A happy dog needs exercise. A venue with countryside walks or open grounds nearby means your dog can be properly stretched between the ceremony and the reception – which makes for a calmer, better-behaved dog for the rest of the day.
8. Will the venue provide water bowls?
A small detail that makes a big difference. A venue that proactively mentions water stations for dogs has genuinely thought about the experience, not just ticked a box on a marketing page.
What the Answers Tell You
A venue with clear, confident answers to all of the above has been through this before. A venue that is vague, says “we’ll see what we can do”, or needs to check with a manager on every question? That’s a venue where dogs are an afterthought.
The best dog-friendly venues have a written dog policy, know their restrictions, and are genuinely enthusiastic about four-legged guests. Those are the ones worth booking.

Getting the right venue is step one. Step two is making sure your dog has a dedicated carer throughout the day – someone who knows dogs, understands wedding timings, and keeps your four-legged guest happy, calm, and well away from the canapés.
